What is the A Phrygian Mode?

Phrygian is the third mode of the major scale, and its defining feature is the ♭2 — a half step right above the root that gives it an immediately recognizable dark, exotic flavor. It's the sound of flamenco guitar and has deep roots in Spanish and Middle Eastern musical traditions. Here's how the A Phrygian Mode lays out on the fretboard.

The third mode - dark and Spanish-flavored. The flat 2 is distinctive. On bass, this scale becomes a toolkit for strong roots, passing tones, and melodic fills that still support the groove. Think in root-on-E and root-on-A boxes, then adapt the same notes for 5-string bass when the low B string gives you another root below the pattern. In the key of A, the notes are: A, Bb, C, D, E, F, G.

How to Use It

You'll often hear it in Metal, Flamenco, and Middle Eastern. A good way to internalize the sound is to sing the root, then sing a few scale degrees before you play them.
