A standard ukulele (soprano, concert or tenor) is tuned G-C-E-A, read from the 4th string nearest your chin to the 1st. In the usual high-G tuning the 4th string sounds higher than the 3rd (G4 C4 E4 A4), which is called re-entrant tuning. Low-G drops that string an octave, and baritone ukuleles use D-G-B-E. fr3t.app shows every note on the neck, playable chord shapes with finger numbers, and scales in each of these tunings.

Notes on the ukulele fretboard

The natural notes on each string from the open string to the 12th fret, in standard high-G tuning. At the 12th fret every string reaches its open note an octave higher.

Ukulele chord shapes

Common chords in standard tuning. Numbers on the dots are fingers (1 = index); ○ is an open string. Pick any chord in the app to see several shapes for it, each with a difficulty label, then strum the one you choose. Extended chords such as 9ths use four-note versions, and the app lists any note left out.

High-G vs low-G

Chord shapes are the same in both tunings; only the 4th string's octave changes. That changes the sound. A C chord played 0-0-0-3 sounds G4 C4 E4 C5 on high-G, with C4 as its lowest note. On low-G the same shape sounds G3 C4 E4 C5, so its lowest note is the G below. Low-G also extends scales five half steps lower, down to G3.

Baritone and other tunings

  • Baritone (D-G-B-E) is tuned like the top four strings of a guitar, so every chord shape names a different chord than on a standard ukulele. See baritone ukulele chords.
  • D tuning (A4 D4 F#4 B4) is standard tuning a whole step higher: the shape you know as C plays D. Open D tuning
  • Open C (G4 C4 E4 G4) sounds a C major chord on the open strings; the app calculates shapes for other chords in this tuning. Open C tuning

Scales, practice and progressions

Choose any scale to see its notes across all four strings, for example the C major scale or the A minor pentatonic on low-G. The note-finding drill helps you learn the neck, and the chord sequencer plays a progression with the shape you picked for each chord.

What it doesn't do: the app isn't a tuner and doesn't listen to your playing, it doesn't convert guitar tabs, and it uses built-in instrument sounds rather than recorded ukulele. The CAGED system is a guitar view and isn't shown for ukulele.
