What is the A Major Scale?

The major scale is the cornerstone of Western music theory — virtually every other scale and mode is defined by how it differs from this pattern. Its bright, resolved sound comes from the specific whole-and-half-step formula (W-W-H-W-W-W-H), and once you internalize it, every other scale becomes a variation you can hear and feel. Here's how the A Major Scale lays out on the fretboard.

How to Use It

You'll often hear it in Pop, Rock, Classical, and Country. A good way to internalize the sound is to sing the root, then sing a few scale degrees before you play them.
