What is the A Major Scale?

The major scale is the cornerstone of Western music theory — virtually every other scale and mode is defined by how it differs from this pattern. Its bright, resolved sound comes from the specific whole-and-half-step formula (W-W-H-W-W-W-H), and once you internalize it, every other scale becomes a variation you can hear and feel.
