What is the E Lydian Mode?

Lydian is the fourth mode of the major scale, distinguished by its raised 4th degree (#4) which creates a dreamy, floating sensation that sounds like the major scale but brighter. You'll hear it in film scores, Steve Vai solos, and Joe Satriani's melodic work — any time a composer wants to evoke wonder or weightlessness. Here's how the E Lydian Mode lays out on the fretboard.

Notes and Positions

The fourth mode - dreamy major with raised 4th. Very bright. On bass, the fretboard view helps you visualize where the important tones sit for building lines across positions. Use a finger-per-fret approach first, then add shifts only when the line needs a wider range. In the key of E, the notes are: E, F#, G#, A#, B, C#, D#.

How to Use It

You'll often hear it in Film Scores, Jazz, and Progressive Rock. A good way to internalize the sound is to sing the root, then sing a few scale degrees before you play them.
