What is the C Lydian Mode?

Lydian is the fourth mode of the major scale, distinguished by its raised 4th degree (#4) which creates a dreamy, floating sensation that sounds like the major scale but brighter. You'll hear it in film scores, Steve Vai solos, and Joe Satriani's melodic work — any time a composer wants to evoke wonder or weightlessness. Here's how the C Lydian Mode lays out on the fretboard.

Notes and Positions

The fourth mode - dreamy major with raised 4th. Very bright. On bass, the fretboard view helps you visualize where the important tones sit for building lines across positions. Use a finger-per-fret approach first, then add shifts only when the line needs a wider range. In the key of C, the notes are: C, D, E, F#, G, A, B.

How to Use It
