What is the B Lydian Mode?

Lydian is the fourth mode of the major scale, distinguished by its raised 4th degree (#4) which creates a dreamy, floating sensation that sounds like the major scale but brighter. You'll hear it in film scores, Steve Vai solos, and Joe Satriani's melodic work — any time a composer wants to evoke wonder or weightlessness. Here's how the B Lydian Mode lays out on the fretboard.

Notes and Positions

The fourth mode - dreamy major with raised 4th. Very bright. On bass, this scale becomes a toolkit for strong roots, passing tones, and melodic fills that still support the groove. Think in root-on-E and root-on-A boxes, then adapt the same notes for 5-string bass when the low B string gives you another root below the pattern. In the key of B, the notes are: B, C#, D#, E#, F#, G#, A#.

How to Use It
