What is the Ab Ionian Mode?

The Ionian mode is musically identical to the major scale, but thinking of it as the first of seven modes opens the door to a completely different way of navigating the fretboard. When you treat Ionian as one color in a palette of seven, you start hearing how each mode creates its own mood over the same set of notes. Here's how the Ab Ionian Mode lays out on the fretboard. This scale is enharmonically equivalent to G# Ionian.

Notes and Positions

The first mode - identical to the major scale. Bright and resolved. On guitar, you can treat this as both a lead vocabulary and a way to see chord tones inside common shapes. Start with one box, then connect it to the nearest root on the next string set. In the key of Ab, the notes are: Ab, Bb, C, Db, Eb, F, G.

How to Use It

You'll often hear it in Pop, Rock, Classical, and Country. A good way to internalize the sound is to sing the root, then sing a few scale degrees before you play them.
