What is the G# Ionian Mode?

The Ionian mode is musically identical to the major scale, but thinking of it as the first of seven modes opens the door to a completely different way of navigating the fretboard. When you treat Ionian as one color in a palette of seven, you start hearing how each mode creates its own mood over the same set of notes. Here's how the G# Ionian Mode lays out on the fretboard. This scale is enharmonically equivalent to Ab Ionian.

Notes and Positions

The first mode - identical to the major scale. Bright and resolved. On bass, the fretboard view helps you visualize where the important tones sit for building lines across positions. Use a finger-per-fret approach first, then add shifts only when the line needs a wider range. In the key of G#, the notes are: G#, A#, B#, C#, D#, E#, F##.

How to Use It

You'll often hear it in Pop, Rock, Classical, and Country. A good way to internalize the sound is to sing the root, then sing a few scale degrees before you play them.
